Transcript File Formats: Which One Do You Need?

SRT subtitles are one of several transcript file formats we deliver. Here is how they compare, so you can request the right deliverable for your project.

SRT (SubRip subtitles)

Numbered captions with start and end timecodes. The standard for video subtitles โ€” accepted by YouTube, Vimeo, Zoom, and every major video editor. Choose SRT when the transcript needs to appear on screen.

Word (.docx)

Full transcripts with speaker labels and optional timestamps, formatted for direct import into NVivo, ATLAS.ti, Dedoose, and MAXQDA. The default choice for qualitative analysis.

PDF

A fixed-layout transcript for sharing, archiving, or appending to reports and ethics documentation โ€” the content cannot shift or be edited accidentally.

Plain text (.txt)

The most portable format โ€” no styling, just the words. Useful for computational text analysis, corpus tools, and custom pipelines.

Need a full transcript instead of subtitles? See our research transcription services โ€” every project can include any of these formats on request.
